A Study on Development and Cytoarchitectonics of Cerebral Cortex in Anterior Part of Cingulate Gyrus (Brodmann¢¥s Area 24) in Normal Korean

Abstract
The authors have made a study of the quantitative changes in the development of human brain with special growth and cytoarchitectonics of cerebral cortex in the anterior part of the cingulate gyrus (Br odmann¢¥s area 24) in a sample of 149 Korean brains (83 of male & 66 of female), of which the age ranged from the newborns to the old age. The thickness of the total cortex and each. cortical layer, the relative neuron density and the relative glia density in (100u)3 of each cortical layer and the relative total neuron and glia densities of the cortex were observed and the results were summerized as follows;
1. The mean thickness of the cortex in the 0-1 year group was 80% of the adult and it increased very rapidly during 2-5 years and it was 96% of the adult. In the 16-20 year group it was maximun thick and thereafter it decreased gradually. The mean thicknes of the adult cortex was 2.13mm. The mean thickness of the cortex increased rapidly until the 1,100-1,199gm stage of the brain weight and increased slowly until the 1, 400-1, 499gm stage of the brain weight and thereafter it had a tendency of slow decreasing as the brain weight increased.
2. The relative neuron density was highest in the 0-1 year group and it decreased very rapidly in the 2-5 year group and it decreased slowly until the 11-15 year group and at this time it was eaqual as the adult mean value. Thereafter it was relatively stable. As the relation between the neuron density and the brain weight, it was highest in 300-500gm stage of the brain weight and it decreased rapidly until the 500-699gm stage of brain weight and it decreased slowly until the brain weight was 900-1,099gm stage and in this stage it became eaqual as the adult mean value. Thereafter it had a tendency to derease slowly as the brain weight increased. The mean valuee of thee neuron density of the adult was 292-309.
3. The relative glia density was high in the 0-1 year group and¢¥ it decreased rapidly in the 2-5 year group and was minimum value which was lower than the adult mean value and thereafter it increased gradually as the age increased.
The mean value of the relative glia density of the adult was 501-536 which is higher than that of the adult neuron density (292-309). -During the 300-499gm,stage of the brain weight the relative glia density was high and it decreased gradually to the minimum value (406-472) until the 1,100-1,199gm stage of the brain weight and thereafter it increased gradually as the brain weight incrceaged.
4. The neuron density and glia density had no sexual difference and left-right difference.
